New Mexico Philharmonic: Sibelius & Shostakovich

The only violinist ever to win Gold Medals at all three of the world’s most prestigious competitions, the Tchaikovsky, the Sibelius and the Paganini competitions, Ilya Kaler is already being compared to the likes of Heifetz and Perlman. Born into a family of musicians in Moscow, Kaler has performed with the Detroit, Baltimore, and Seattle Symphony Orchestras, and at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. He has toured Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Singapore, Korea, Taiwan, England, Venezuela and Japan. Also born in the Soviet Union, Victor Yampolsky—the son of the great pianist Vladimir Yampolsky—studied violin with the legendary David Oistrakh at the Moscow Conservatory and conducting with Maestro Nicolai Rabinovich at the Leningrad Conservatory. Yampolsky has conducted over 80 professional and student orchestras throughout the world, including repeat engagements with orchestras in the United States, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, the Czech Republic, and Chile. Pre-concert lecture by Mr. Yampolsky at 5:00 p.m. Please Note: This event is a courtesy listing and not a Popejoy Presents event.
