Otello: Gioachino Rossini's 19th Opera

Based loosely on the Shakespeare play, played an important part in the development of the 19th century serious Italian opera, paving the way for Giuseppe Verdi’s opera of the same name more than sixty years later. Rarely staged in America, Opera Southwest’s production boasts two unique aspects. First, on opening night the American staged premiere of the joyful ending will be presented. Rossini wrote this for a Roman audience which rejected tragic endings to their operas. The tragic ending will also be presented on that night. Second, for the final performances we will have the audience vote on which ending, tragic or joyful, they wish to see. This special “audience participation” aspect will heighten the emotional and dramatic investment of the spectators and make for a truly special evening.
