A cheery little cherry liqueur

Oct 15, 2012 01:25PM ● Published by Stacy

We can only guess what their fellow Frenchmen thought decades ago when the Marnier-Lapostolle family began blending orange essence into their cognacs.

Will they turn up their refined noses at Grand Marnier Cherry? If so, such snobbery shouldn’t last long. The liqueur was scheduled for a limited holiday release near our September presstime.

Grand Marnier Cherry ($42/750 ml) gets much of its flavor from the essence of European Griottes cherries.

A tiny bottle sent this summer gave us enough to pronounce the liquid fragrant and warmingly intense; but a bit too sweet to enjoy straight. Try it with your own recipe, but here’s one of our favorites from its maker:

Grand Cherry Vanilla

2 oz Grand Marnier Cherry
1 oz vanilla vodka
1/2 oz simple syrup
8-10 mint leaves

Combine Grand Marnier Cherry, vanilla vodka, simple syrup and mint leaves into a cocktail shaker with ice and shake very well. Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with a vanilla bean-skewered pair of mint leaves.
